Police hunt for new Frome site as station put on the market
The chief inspector for Mendip has reassured Frome residents the police are not leaving the town, despite a huge for sale sign going up outside the station.
Chief Inspector Sean Williams has told the Somerset Standard several members of the public had approached the front office staff to voice their concerns after the sign was put in place recently.

The for sale sign outside Frome Police Station in Oakfield Road
Rumours that the police station was to be sold were first reported in the Standard in July 2010 and despite continued denials, the police finally confirmed that it would close the station and the land sold in a statement released in March 2011.
Chief Inspector Williams said: "We have had several members of the public ask us about the for sale sign at Frome Police Station and want to make residents aware that we are actively looking for a new site in Frome.

"We are not looking to close the Frome front counter office or reduce the police operation in the town, just reduce our costs.
"The Oakfield Road building is far too large and has many empty offices, especially since the magistrates' court closed, so what we need is a premises that is much more cost effective."
Chief Inspector Williams said the police had yet to find a suitable site but the search is continuing.
The sale of the building is being managed by Hartnell, Taylor and Cook.
The 3.15-acre site will be sold by informal tender and the deadline for proposals is Thursday, April 18.
The now defunct magistrates' court is also on the same site as the police station and will be sold off along with the station.

“Frome has more supermarket space per head of population than any other town in the region.
More supermarkets = dead towns. Is that what the people of Frome would want?”

“I'm sure the many hard working Frome people who work in retail (independent as well as larger companies) will appreciate the suggestion that they do not have "proper jobs"!
I also find it odd that people think that sites near the fringes of town like this are more suitable for retail development than the town centre.”

“we don't need more shops we need more proper jobs. Turn it into offices or a factory. Supermarkets just move shop jobs from town and put the same people into their supermarket. We need jobs that produce services or make things and pay decent wages.”
