Staff and pupils at Brookside School and Street Children's Centre marked the opening of a new teaching centre this week.

The school and centre is one of the first approved to take part in a pilot scheme for Early Years Teaching Centres in the whole of Somerset.

Viv Drake, a spokeswoman for the centre said: "This initiative will afford us exciting new opportunities to build on our excellent local relationships, and to develop our already extensive collaborative work."

She said the new scheme would give them the chance to provide training and development resources to everyone involved in early years education.

"We would like to express our appreciation to our colleagues and members of the Children's Centre Advisory Board for their support of our application," she said.

"We look forward to contributing to raising standards of early years provision throughout the area through our involvement in this revolutionary project, and will work closely with our colleagues to develop the next generation of early years leaders."
