When it comes to brushing your pets, don't forget their teeth.

That's the message from Shepton Veterinary Group as staff gear up for Pet Smile Month in September, aimed at raising awareness of dental disease and the effect it has on pets' teeth.

Emma Neal, veterinary nurse at the Shepton Veterinary Group, said: "It is estimated that up to 80 per cent of dogs and cats over three years old require dental treatment. The signs to look out for include bad breath, excessive drooling, picky eating or even pawing at the mouth.

"Dental disease can cause significant pain and tooth loss, but it can also result in bacteria entering the blood stream and affecting the heart and kidneys."

The problem begins when almost invisible, creamy coloured plaque forms a film over the tooth surface, providing a grid for bacteria to adhere to and multiply. At this point, regular tooth brushing will remove this plaque.

"There are various designs of pet tooth brushes available, or a soft child's toothbrush could be used. Human toothpaste is unsuitable so a pet toothpaste should be selected. Some good results can also be achieved using specific food or chews to clean the teeth. Not all dental diets are properly validated or clinically proven so professional advice should be sought," said Emma.

If no cleaning takes place, the plaque will spread. When it reaches the gum line and enters an oxygen poor environment, more toxins will be released and the gums will become swollen and painful. The periodontal ligament that holds the tooth in place is weakened by inflammation and infection, resulting in loose teeth.

During September you can take your dog or cat to a participating practice for a free Pet Smile Check Up. In addition, the veterinary team will be able to offer you individual advice on preventative homecare.

A national "Healthy Smile" Art Competition is also being held, with prizes including a flight in a Hot Air Balloon and MP3 players. Entries are through the local competitions held by each Pet Smile Month veterinary practice.
