MATCH REPORT: St Neots Town 0 Frome Town 1

An early goal from Mike Perrott and a resolute defensive performance for much of the match gave Frome Town an excellent away victory at St Neots Town and a priceless three points in Evo-Stik League Southern Premier.

The visitors broke the deadlock after just three minutes when Dean Evans chipped the ball into the area. Jack Giddens failed to gather cleanly and Dave Gilroy cleverly rolled the ball into the path of Perrott to fire home.

The hosts’ first opportunity came in the 12th minute when Ben Mackey let fly from outside the box but Frome keeper Darren Chitty was quickly down to save comfortably.

St Neots missed out on a golden chance in the 34th minute, with Lewis Hilliard producing a perfect cross for Ben Mackey but he could only hit the side-netting from close range.

Lewis Hilliard caused problems on the left for St Neots and Tom Evans had to be quick to intercept a cross, while Hilliard also saw a free-kick land on the roof of the net.

The Robins went close to increasing their lead on the stroke of half-time through Josh Brigham’s free-kick, but the ball just cleared the far post.

In an even second half chances were few and far between, although Darren Perrin’s visitors had a goal disallowed in the 56th minute. Matt Smith headed home Darren Jefferies’ cross only to be denied by an offside flag.

Dan Jacob could have pinched a point for St Neots in stoppage time when a inch-perfect pass put him clean through on goal, but his shot went wide as the Robins held on for a hard-fought win.

Frome’s H&B Tyres man of the match award went to Dave Thompson for an excellent display in the centre of defence.
