An international field of 3,000 triathletes gathered at Queens Wharf and Ryman was in 12th place after completing the swim in 11:15 but was quick through the first transition and set the fourth fastest time of 31:45 on the bike.
Another speedy transition set him up well for the final leg and he quickly moved up to third. He was also closing on home competitor Scott McGregory in second but ran out of time and finished eight seconds behind after a 16:57 run.
Ryman's efforts helped Great Britain clinch third place in the medal table, with Australia top and New Zealand second.
