Paul Nicholls targets Old Roan Chase for Pacha Du Polder
Paul Nicholls has both Pacha Du Polder and Poquelin in the reckoning for the Betfred Monet’s Garden Old Roan Chase at Aintree on Saturday week.
Pacha Du Polder would be the champion trainer’s first choice for the two-and-a-half-mile heat after winning a Grade Two at Ayr on his final start of last term.
He won three of his five outings last season and Nicholls believes this would be a good starting point, although stable stalwart Poquelin is waiting in the wings should plans go awry.
Nicholls said: “We are looking at starting off Pacha Du Polder in the Old Roan Chase. That is the plan but, if for any reason he doesn’t make it, Poquelin could go there.

“Pacha Du Polder is fine and in top form. To win three races as a novice is ideal.
“He got better as he went further last season and the Old Roan Chase looks like an ideal starting point.
“I don’t have any longer term targets with him as he is a young horse and very lightly raced.
“I hope there is more improvement in him, you always do from five to six, but we will see when he runs.”
