As regional diets go, the West Country’s passion for pasties and cider is one of the best known.

So it’s some surprise to discover that more than half of those in the region are made ill by cider and an even greater proportion can’t stomach a pasty.

A survey of 1,083 people by YorkTest Laboratories, experts in food intolerance, found that 62 per cent of people in Cornwall, Devon and Somerset say pasties cause them problems including eczema and bloating.

And of those in the same area, the cider heartland, 51 per cent experience similar symptoms when drinking the regional tipple.

The survey is intended to highlight that an estimated 45 per cent of Britons have some form of food intolerance. And given that a quarter of Britons can’t eat a full English and four per cent avoid afternoon tea, they may be right.
