More than 60 volunteers are throwing a Christmas Day party in Frome for those people who may otherwise have missed out on celebrating the big day.

For the first time ever an event is being held at the Cheese and Grain for people who live alone, are on a pension or on a low income and cannot afford a traditional Christmas.

The big Christmas get-together includes a festive lunch, presents and entertainment. It is based on the Bath Open Christmas initiative.

The party is being funded by a Flourish Homes Community Chest grant and is supported by a number of organisations including Frome Wholefoods, the Fancy Network, the LIST Frome, Food Frome and Bath Soup Company.

Organiser Charlie Thomas said: "The response we have had from people wanting to volunteer has been amazing. It just proves what a remarkable community Frome has – there are so many residents who actively want to help others. Everyone deserves a great Christmas, but in these tough economic times many people find this a real stretch. Frome's Big Christmas get-together aims to bring residents together and create a really special day."

Anyone who would like to enjoy lunch on Christmas Day will need to book a place.

Guest forms are available from venues around the town, including the Key Centre, Social Services, YMCA, Open Story Tellers, Frome Leisure Centre, Dee's Hairdressers and churches among others. Alternatively, people can email fromechristmas@gmail.com or call 07746 553521.
