A Glastonbury Police Community Support Officer has spoken of her surprise after winning a Pride of Central Somerset Award.

Those being honoured on Friday, March 6, at Glastonbury Town Hall also include: the Glastonbury and Street Rotary Club; Glastonbury and Street Lions' Club; the schools that took part in the Light Up A Life services; Steven Argent, the founder of Orphfund; Frances Thomson; the Poppy Appeal; the Mid Somerset Diabetes Group; and Children's World.

PCSO Jemma Lawson will be honoured for her work with young people in Glastonbury.

She has been working in the town for the past two years and, along with her usual duties of patrolling, community speedwatch and fighting graffiti in the town, has been working with youngsters in the Hill area.

"I absolutely couldn't believe it when I saw my name in the newspaper along with everyone else who had won awards," she said.

"I take a lot of pride in my job and I put in 110 per cent when it comes to working with these young people. I can remember what it was like being that age and having nothing to do."

PCSO Lawson has helped youngsters on Windmill Hill to raise funds for a trip to a theme park.

"We didn't manage to raise enough with the sponsored car wash we did in the summer, as the weather was so bad, but we have plans for another fundraising event in the next couple of months," she said.

"I would d like to thank everyone who nominated me for the award and, of course, the Glastonbury beat team – it's fantastic to think that people are recognising all the hard work we have been doing – it's just unbelievable."

Glastonbury beat manager PC Mark Pople paid tribute to her hard work, saying he was pleased that she had been honoured.

"Not only is it great for Jemma, but it's great for the Glastonbury neighbourhood team – and Glastonbury – in general," he said.

Tickets for the event are almost sold out but the last few can be ordered by phoning 01458 255012.

Firms are being offered the chance to get involved by sponsoring one of the awards. For more information contact Alex Maine on 07733 243 468, or at im@srv.cc.
