Morrisons worked in partnership with Jobcentre Plus and Strode College to ensure that 87 of the 200 jobs went to people who were previously unemployed, and ran a pre-employment course for people to get experience of working in a supermarket.
Store manager, Dave Benkenstein, said: "I know from talking to customers in the local area that they're really excited to see the store open and I'm confident they'll love what they see.
"We wanted to create an experience that was different from other supermarkets in Wells; offering customers a fantastic range of fresh products at great value and excellent customer service.
"The team have worked hard to train as specialists in areas such as wine, butchery and bakery and the fresh market concept means that many products are created by these specialists from scratch each morning.
"We are really keen to be part of the local community and I hope that having a cafe here will provide a much needed place for the local community to meet."
The appearance of the new store has caused complaints from some who see it as a "blot on the landscape" of Wells. See letters page 28.
