Olympic evening

Cheddar WI

There was no chance of post-Olympic blues for our Cheddar WI, as we staged our own Olympic Evening this month.

Richard Fay was one of the lucky ones to carry the Olympic flame locally and his mother Corran and sister Charlotte, who was one of the wonderful helpers at the London venue, regaled us with highlights of their adventures. We passed round Richard's torch (which was surprisingly heavy) and other souvenirs.

Next, we were treated to a sparkling display of roller-skating, contortion and hoop-handling (six of them) by Hayley Chickey and Rachel Comber from the Wookey Hole Circus Group.

Jan Fenner then told us about her thrilling never-to-be-forgotten day with her family in London at the Olympics and I mentioned that I had been to two London Olympics, the first which was held in 1948 in a time of austerity, and the 2012 one in all its luxurious splendour – quite a difference.

And then it was time for the games. There were several different events: throwing straws into a bucket, bouncing a ball up and down on a table tennis bat, bagatelle, rifle shooting, etc. The winners of these events competed in an egg and spoon race round the hall to decide the overall winners. The evening concluded with an impressive medal ceremony with much cheering and waving of flags while Gladys went to the piano to accompany us in a rousing rendition of the National Anthem.

Tea and cakes followed of course for competitors and spectators. What a fun evening it was. Many thanks to all who contributed.
