A young, hard-driving, heavy-bearded, old-time string band from Fresno in California are venturing into Westcountry territory next weekend.

Old Tire Swingers are influenced by the Appalachian string outfits of yore, as well as more modern musical elements ranging through bluegrass and country to Americana.

When band member Paul Chesterton first heard bluegrass music ten years ago, he fell in love with the sound of the banjo. So inspired was he that he eventually purchased his own instrument and started teaching himself how to play it. After spending a couple years practising and writing songs, Paul put together the band – Nick Kennedy on the acoustic guitar, Frick Dau on the stand-up bass and Eathan Hakker on mandolin. They pride themselves on their two- and three-part vocal harmonies.

Since their first show in February 2011, the band have toured England, Wales and the USA and just released their self-titled debut album.
