MANCHESTER United's stars of the future could return to Yeovil Town, after the Old Trafford club admitted reserve team football was no substitute for competitive action.

The Red Devils visited Huish Park on Saturday, as reserve team manager and ex-striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer fielded a young side for Darren Way's benefit match.

The Glovers' technical coach formally ended his playing career after being forced to hang up his boots through injuries sustained in a car crash.

Among their starting line-up, United boasted Brazilian Rodrigo Possebon and Craig Cathcart – both of whom have played senior football.

Solskjaer said time in npower League One would be beneficial for the talented youngsters that played Yeovil.

"We are always looking for our players to learn because the reserve league sometimes is different," he said. "If you play in League One you have got to get three points from the next game because the manager's job is on the line.

"When you play in the reserves, it is about development, so when they are ready, we look for clubs to take them on loan. For us it is about the individual, every single player has different needs and different teams can give us different things for different players."

Yeovil manager Terry Skiverton admitted he was impressed with United but remained tight-lipped on the prospect of any loan signings.

He said: "They have got some fantastic talent, whether or not they come to Yeovil. People like Cathcart is a very good player and even Oliver Gill at the back."

The Huish Park side sealed a one month loan deal for Milwall keeper John Sullivan on Tuesday. The Glovers travel to Torquay United for their final friendly on Saturday.
