Nick Compton proud of 'massive' season at Somerset

Nick Compton has enjoyed a bumper season at Somerset.

Compton was the leading run scorer in the First Class game with 1,494 to his credit and topped the batting averages with 99.60, a remarkable achievement given the weather and an injury which sidelined him for a month.

At the end of it all Compton received the Cricket Writers’ award for player of the year and was named as Professional Cricketers’ Association player of the year, as well as being selected by England as a member of the touring party for the Test series in India later in the autumn.

Compton said: “It has been a massive year and one that I will look back upon in the future and think I am really proud of those achievements.”

He got his season off to a flying start when he scored 236 in First Class opener against Cardiff MCCU, sharing a record-breaking Somerset partnership of 450 with James Hildreth.

“I don’t mind who I score runs against because it’s the mindset and the application that is more important and for me that is what pre-season is all about, spending a lot of time out in the middle, practising the right habits and getting back into them,” said Compton. “The more time you spend at the wicket the better and I think that innings laid the foundations for what came after that.”

Compton looked set to be the first batsman in an English season to reach 1,000 runs before the end of May since Graeme Hick in 1984, but was thwarted by the weather at Worcester on May 31. But that did not stop him topping the averages.

“It’s great to see my name at the top of the batting averages and sometimes I take a look at the paper just to make sure it’s true,” he said. “I don’t think that it has settled in yet.

“The awards that I have been given are so fantastic and I am overwhelmed. I had never dreamed that I would receive the Professional Cricketers’ Association award having gone to so many events and seen people like Marcus Trescothick and Mark Ramprakash and all those stars go up there.”

There then followed his England call-up.

“It was a dream come true to suddenly get a call from Geoff Miller to say I had been selected for England,” said Compton. “I was just so delighted and phoned my parents, and I think I was more happy for them really, to be able to give them something to be proud of, I think that is what gives me the most satisfaction.”

Compton sets off for India on October 26 via Dubai. “Between now and then there will be a lot more hard work, because it doesn’t stop now even though I’d love a holiday,” he said.
