A multi-million pound “super pond” is set to be built near Weston-super-Mare to prevent flooding on new developments.

The huge lake – which will cover 22 hectares and cost around £10 million to build – will be created on the former Weston Airfield site as part of long term plans for new homes and businesses nearby.

The lake is needed as much of the land in the Weston Villages development, on Weston airfield and the former RAF Locking base, lies within an area of flood risk and can only be built on if future flood risk is avoided.

The cost of building the pond will be met by developers as part of legally-binding planning deals.
