NEW safety signs have been installed at Burnham and Berrow beaches ahead of the summer by Sedgemoor District Council.

The council believes the five improved signs, which include maps of the beach areas, emergency contacts and lifeguard information, are essential.

The signs are backed by experts including the Coastguard, RNLI, EnCams, which administers the Quality Coast Awards, and the Royal Lifesaving Saving Society UK.

Council spokesman Sam Elliott said: "With more people using the beaches for pleasure, the demands placed on our water safety staff have never been greater.

"We hope visitors and locals find the signs helpful and informative."
