New permit scheme planned for recycling centres in Bath, Keynsham and Old Welton
A new permit scheme is being introduced at the Bath area’s recycling centres.
People living in B&NES will either have to register for a free permit or show their Discovery Card to use the centres at Midland Road in Bath, Keynsham and Old Welton.
From April 2, anyone who cannot prove they live in the district will be turned away in a move aimed at ensuring B&NES Council does not foot the bill for the rubbish of other areas.
A spokesman said: “The council pays a significant amount of money each year for non-Bath and north east Somerset residents to dispose of their waste for free at our recycling centres. We cannot continue to subsidise this. “This new permit should make it fairer for all – residents pay council tax to allow them to dispose of household rubbish and recycling they create and not that of residents living in other authority areas.”

“According to this news item, and a large banner outside the Midland Road site, the new scheme started on April 2nd. Well, I went there today (April 9th) in a car that had not been registered and none of the staff asked to see any ID for proof of BANES residency! So - is this scheme working or not ????”

“Bathcycle - I'll see your mattress and raise you a mattress and a large white builders bag full of laminate flooring - all dumped on the Wansdyke footpath, conveniently widened by the council to allow traffic and now costing them money to clean up the tipping on a regular basis. They really are full of great ideas!”

“I just wish there was a way that the staff in Bath could let drivers queuing know that there are a number of spaces behind the van or car already parked. I've never seen it happen yet and it can be so annoying when one person takes 5 minutes to tidy their car after their rubbish has been emptied. I will say that the staff there are very helpful in many other ways.”

“"About the wheel barrow: foot traffic is forbidden..." No, it isn't. And as far as I know it never has been."
For quite some time now there has been a notice at the entrance instructing pedestrians to "see a member of staff before entering the site". Bit of a Catch-22 situation really, given that you need to enter the site in order to speak to any of the staff!
Fortunately it IS usually possible - if you wait for a while - to actually 'see' a member of staff from outside, so then you can claim at least to be obeying the letter of the law, even if not the spirit :-)”
