A NEW "much-needed" medical centre for Chard is set to be built on part of a school playing field to replace an out of date practice in the town.

The new building will take up one third of the Manor Court School field. It will provide a new home for the Dr Down and Partners GP based at the Tawstock Medical Centre on High Street.

The application had been recommended for refusal by South Somerset District Council officers because of the proposed location.

Sport England, the government agency responsible for sport objected to it because of the loss of part of the field. Chard Town Council also recommended the application for refusal.

The district council was divided but decided to approve the application because of the desperate need for up to date medical facilities in the town.
