A COMPETITION to capture the essence of Apex Park has born a new logo for the beauty spot.

The Friends of Apex Park Improvements Group competition asked Year 10 art students at King Alfred School to submit an artistic, snappy one-liner to sum up the town's park.

The winning slogan - Fish, Walk or Play - written by Jessica Simpson came from more than 30 entries.

Fellow student James Clark's design, of the word 'Apex' being fished out of water, was also recognised.

They were chosen by Emma Fisher, head of art at the Highbridge secondary school, and the Friends.

Emma said: "The competition was brilliant, it was well received by the students and it showed what the students thought of the park.

"Jessica's design was excellent , while I liked James' design, which summed up the fishing at the park."

Jessica received a £30 WH Smith voucher and James a £20 voucher. Cleo Stead, Grace Housden, Bradley Johnson and Anna Kevan each received commendations for their work.

Council spokesman Claire Faun said: "The event was part of the council's 2009 entry of Apex Park into the Green Flag Award.

"The competition was run in response to a previous Green Flag Award judge's comments that it was difficult for visitors to know what the park offered from looking in on it."

The Green Flag Award is the national standard for parks and green spaces in England and Wales.

It began in 1996 to recognise and reward the best green spaces as well as encourage others to achieve the same standards. The scheme is managed by Keep Britain Tidy, BTCV and GreenSpace.
