New entrants are welcomed at 45th horticultural show
DISPLAYING a remarkable history, the Frome Selwood Horticulture Society hosted its 45th successive annual show in August.
The society prides itself on its welcoming spirit, never more so than in the encouragement given for the newer members to take part in the good-natured competition.
Show secretary Mike Meaden was delighted that of the strong membership 49 members exhibited a total of 503 entries, up on previous years.
Many of the members are involved with the Welshmill allotments, close to Rossetti House and in recognition of the need to keep active, a community link is being forged for escorted visits for some of the residents who may have had a lifetime of gardening.
Developing this liaison, chairman Richard Robinson welcomed and introduced Mark Barnes, Rossetti House's home manager. After a tour of the laden tables, taking in the profusion of fuchsias and variety of vegetables, Mr Barnes then had the honour and pleasure of presenting the trophies.
Top prize, the Ralph Showering Memorial Trophy for best exhibit in show, went to Jean Norman for her near perfect gladioli. Jean Maddocks took top prize for her floral art and Jean Lemon took the coveted Westover Trophy for most points in homecraft.
Not to be outdone by the Jeans, June Needs took novice cups for her flowers and vegetables, David Turner won most points in show and the flower classes with some spectacular dahlia's, Mike Meaden kept up his reputation for growing prize begonias, Andy Wilson won the Garden News Top Tray and Alistair Wood remained the top all rounder, retaining the Master Gardener award.
For the armchair gardeners the society's own British bake-off saw beautiful cakes, produce and harvest boxes. Terry Joyce took top prize for his photography.
All in all, the society was delighted with the response from the public. Thanks go to everyone who participated, from growing and showing to making teas.
Selwood Academy continues to be the perfect venue and thanks go to the principal for allowing its use.
