New Red Cross patron in county
THE Lord Lieutenant of Somerset has been appointed the new patron of the county's branch of the British Red Cross.
Lady Elizabeth Gass has a long history of support for the charity.
She served as vice president and deputy president during the 1990s and early 2000s and was involved in recent Red Cross activities such as the Somerset centenary celebrations in 2010.
She said: "I was delighted to receive my certificate and badge confirming me as a new patron for Somerset and I am looking forward to continuing my fundraising work for the British Red Cross in Somerset."
Every year Lady Gass opens her gardens at Stogursey during Red Cross Week, raising thousands of pounds for the charity's work helping people in crisis.
Operations director Sarah Gibson said: "We are delighted to welcome Lady Gass as our new patron.
"The role of Red Cross patron is a very important one, acting as a local ambassador for the charity and helping us to raise funds to promote our vision and mission locally."
