New Bristol park and ride will link to rapid bus route

A SCHEME to build a new park-and-ride on the edge of Bristol has been granted planning permission.

Permission has been given for the site off the Rosary Roundabout opposite the Sainsbury's supermarket in Emersons Green.

The site will provide 264 spaces for cars and link up with the proposed £200 million rapid bus route from the northern fringe of the city to Hengrove. Bus services are also expected to run from the site but no contracts between operators and South Gloucestershire Council have been agreed.

The new park and ride is aimed at easing chronic congestion on the Avon Ring Road and the M32. Developers will pay for the site as part of planning consent for more than 2,500 homes at Emersons Green, which will also include three new schools.

Under the agreement for the new park and ride, the developers must build it by the time the 400th home is completed.

Conservative councillors for Emersons Green, Colin Hunt, Dave Kearns and James Hunt, welcomed the news.

They said: "It's good news that after many years of campaigning we have finally reached the stage where planning permission has been granted.

"The idea is to attract commuters travelling along the ring road towards to the M32 to use this new park and ride so we can reduce traffic congestion further along the A4174 and improve people's journey times.

"We want to see this built well before the housing development is completed so we do not have to play catch up when all the new residents have moved in.

"We now have to keep up the pressure on the developers to get on and build it as quickly as possible and not delay development as has happened elsewhere in South Gloucestershire – there are no more excuses."

The bus rapid transit (BRT) system is seen as a way to help ease traffic congestion by providing a fast, reliable bus service.

South Gloucestershire councillors are keen to go ahead with the north fringe to Hengrove BRT route as soon as possible.
