A Royal Navy airman who served at Yeovilton has been killed in a motorbike crash during the Manx Grand Prix on the Isle of Man.

Petty Officer Jamie Adam, 28, joined HMS Sultan in Gosport, in March from the Somerset-based 846 Naval Air Squadron, where he worked on the Sea King Commando aircraft.

Another rider also died in the accident.

Traffic police officer Sergeant Chris Bradshaw, 39, also died in hospital on Wednesday after his bike was involved in a collision on the second lap of a race in the Manx Grand Prix.

Mr Bradshaw, 39, from Tamworth, Staffordshire, had served as a police officer since 1992 and had worked across the West Midlands and Leicestershire police forces.

The "highly-skilled" officer had been serving as a traffic sergeant in the operations department based at Chelmsley Wood, Solihull, at the time he died.

During his time in the Royal Navy, P/O Adam served tours in Afghanistan and Iraq.

He had just completed his Petty Officer air engineering technician qualifying course at the Royal Naval Air Engineering and Survival Equipment School at HMS Sultan.

A tribute released by HMS Sultan said: "A professional and committed individual, he had made a real success of his course and was shortly due to join 771 Naval Air Squadron at Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose, Cornwall.

"Popular and well-known, his passion for motorcycling was always evident and he was an enthusiastic member of the Royal Navy Motorcycle Club, for whom he often raced.

"His tragic loss, coming so unexpectedly while doing the sport he loved, is felt deeply both within HMS Sultan and throughout the wider Fleet Air Arm."

No spectators were injured in the crash, which took place at about 11am on Wednesday, and both riders were injured in the same incident, police said.

A joint statement issued by Isle of Man Constabulary and the Manx Motorcycle Club said: "The Manx Motorcycle Club, organisers of the Manx Grand Prix, regret to announce the death of a second rider at today's Manx Grand Prix.

"Both riders were involved in a racing accident at Alpine Cottage on the second lap of the Junior race shortly before 11am. The race was later abandoned.

"The next of kin of both families have been informed. The Manx Motorcycle Club extends their deepest sympathy to the family and friends of both men. The incident is now being investigated by the Isle of Man Constabulary, who are preparing a report for the coroner."
