National Grid unveils Somerset pylon plans between Hinkley Point and Avonmouth
National Grid has announced details of the draft route for electricity cables between the proposed new Hinkley Point C nuclear power station and Avonmouth.
New pylons will stride across the Somerset Levels, a proposal that has angered local people - many claiming that the new pylons will be twice the size of the existing line. They have called for the line to be buried underground.

National Grid say that the removal of the existing power line would mean that there would be 95 fewer pylons in the area overall.
A five-mile stretch would be buried where the line runs through the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. (AONB)

Weston-super-Mare MP John Penrose hailed the undergrounding of the cable through the AONB as a victory and said: "This is great news for everyone who lives in and visits the Mendip Hill Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
"If these whopping great pylons had gone ahead we'd have damaged some of our finest countryside. I'm absolutely delighted that a combination of local pressure and good sense have won through.
