Nailsea & Backwell boosted their hopes of avoiding the drop from Somerset Premier with a vital 30-26 home defeat of Midsomer Norton.

The Ravens, who were comfortably beaten at Norton earlier in the campaign, have now won two of their last four matches to pull four points clear of third-bottom Taunton. There were two tries from Scott Farrer, plus one apiece by Jack Quick and Jamie Sullivan, with Rob Baker booting two conversions and two penalties.

Imperial are a point behind Taunton, but now have two games in hand on their rivals after their home clash with Gordano fell victim to a water logged pitch.

Weston-super-Mare consolidated a mid-table position with a 30-14 triumph at Tor. Tries came from Seb Harris, Harry Jones, Ed Saunders and David Price with Chris Young adding two conversions and two penalties.

Chew Valley remain third after a 33-28 victory at Taunton, who rallied strongly after trailing 22-6 at the break.

The visitors’ tries came from Darren Jefferies, David Blaney, Chris Holley and Andy McCormack, Alex Cameron booting two conversions and three penalties.

Somerset One leaders Old Reds made it 17 from 17, thumping third-placed Wiveliscombe 47-24, Chris Lane, Chris Jones, Paul Todd and Lewis Beer all touching down twice.

Second-placed Keynsham romped in 54-10 at Yatton, the lively Marlon Dorset bagging a hat-trick, with Dan Keepax (2), James Marsh, Dean Whitcombe and Dan Howlett also touching down. There were also three conversions by Gaz Deere and two by Matt Fairless.

St Bernadette’s were awarded a walkover against Bristol Barbarians, who were unable to field a front row.
