Motocross round-up: Antonio Cairoli and Jeffrey Herlings continue World Championship domination
Italian Antonio Cairoli and Dutch teenager Jeffrey Herlings continued their domination of the World Motocross Championships in the Netherlands Grand Prix at Leirop on Sunday.
Although troubled by arm cramp, Cairoli came from behind to snatch an eight second win over Germany’s Max Nagl in the first open class race.
Nagl was involved in a first lap crash in the second race, which became a procession after Cairoli had established an early lead. Shaun Simpson was the best Brit, finishing in eighth and fifth positions respectively.
Herlings was at his brilliant best in front of his home supporters in the 250cc class races. He won the first race by two minutes and seven seconds and in doing so he lapped the entire field, apart from second- placed Belgian Jeremy Van Horebeek. British challengers Max Anstie, Tommy Searle and Jake Nicholls were lapped.

Herlings was also dominant in the second race, but on this occasion Van Horebeek, Anstie and Searle managed to finish on the same lap as Herlings, who is being schooled by KTM manager and former ten times world kingpin Stefan Everts.
Wheel to wheel racing in the experts class between Taunton youngster Tommy Alba and Kelvin Townsend were one of the many highlights in the South Hams club’s South West Off Road Series Motocross at Garlands Moor, near Holsworthy. Alba managed to win all three races but the results were in doubt right until the final bend on all three occasions.
Mark Hunt was top scorer in the senior class, but he did not win either race.
Oliver Savery, William Hawkins and Tom Atwell were the race winners, but Hunt’s three second place finishes were sufficient to give him an overall win.
Exmoor veteran Tim Hawkins failed to finish the first junior 250/400cc race, but he won the two remaining races to finish second to Elliott Waldron, who also had three second place finishes.
Joe Claydon won all his races in the 14-17 years inter junior group and Brendan Cooper did likewise in the 9-13 years age group.
John Corin and Stuart Keedwell both retained clean sheets in winning the Pre-1965 and Twin Shock classes in the Taunton club’s trial at Kingston St Mary in Somerset.
Joe Baker repeated his win in a North Devon event pre previous weekend by dominating the Otter Vale club’s annual Stuart Cup Trial near Honiton, which was decided over three laps of a dozen sections at Wingate Hill.
