Mixed results for weakened team
A young North Somerset Athletics Club team had mixed fortunes at the final meeting of a successful Gloucester Cross-Country League season in Tewkesbury.
With a dozen of the club's athletes representing Avon at the South West Schools Championships on the same day, it was an opportunity for their team-mates to shine on a cold and snowy day.
With Ellie Wallace having already secured the under-13 title for herself and the team, Alys Withers stepped up to the plate with a great run to finish second. She was followed by ever-presents Sofie Andersen (12th), Kate Gilbert (14th) and Holy Gilbert (16th).
The under-13 boys were in gold medal position going into the final race but the loss of runners to the schools' event meant they were unable to field a full team and missed out on a medal.
Sam Dangerfield put in a fantastic run to finish second, while Euan Campbell showed great determination to outsprint two of his rivals for 11th.
Despite his absence, David Warnes secured the individual overall gold thanks to his previous results.
The under-11 boys needed a massive turnaround to improve on their third position overall but it was not to be and they had to settle for bronze.
Sam Gentry gave it his best shot to finish fifth, coming just outside the individual overall medals in fourth, but with another year to come in the age group he will be among the favourites next year.
Ollie Lock came home 16th in Tewkesbury to claim ninth place overall, while Shoji Leach was 17th and debutant Angus Black was 19th.
There was disappointment for the under-11 girls, who were shaded into second place by just two positions.
Hattie Emery led from the off and secured her third league win in some style to earn individual gold overall, while Sophie Parker and Caroline Walder were 13th and 15th respectively as North Somerset were beaten to top spot by the Forest of Dean.
In the under-15 boys' race, Byron Marriot secured his highest-placed finish of the season. With 200 metres to go he dug deep into his resources to close a 40-metre gap and pass his rival just before the line to finish second.
North Somerset's girls in the same age group were all away on duty with Avon Schools but their previous performances were enough to secure team gold, while Katie Grinyer took the individual title.
Calum Hannay cruised to third in the under-17 boys' race, while Cecelia Bradley came second for the girls, securing individual bronze overall.
