Drivers reported police vehicles travelling at high speed towards the Thatched Cottage before the incident where the Seat struck a police BMW estate car.
Inspector Mark Nicholson said: “A 60-year-old woman from Yeovil went missing, implying she was going to commit suicide.
“Vans were out and about looking for her and she was located by off-duty police officers at Stoke St Michael parked in a layby.
“She drove off, giving a glancing blow to a police vehicle, going carelessly.
“There was a low-speed follow until she deliberately drove into a police car at traffic lights.”
The woman was reported missing at 3pm on Monday, but had been missing since about 4.30am.
Mr Nicholson said: “She was eventually arrested for criminal damage to another vehicle but no-one was injured.
“We are concerned about her welfare.”
The woman has been released from custody and received a summons to attend court.
