Mid-Somerset Riding Club has been awarded the British Riding Club's highest accolade after being named its club of the year.

With 430 riding clubs and 30,000 members throughout Britain, it is a huge honour for the West Country club, which has a membership of just 150.

Chairman Margaret Peverley said: "I am delighted that such a prestigious award should come to the club. 2012 was the ideal year for such an achievement, following a wonderful summer of sport."

The title is awarded to the best-performing club across all national championships. To participate in a championship, members have to qualify at Area level and win the right to go forward to National level.

In the South West, Area 12 encompasses clubs from Devon, Dorset and Somerset and competition is fierce for the national opportunities. Mid-Somerset showed great versatility across the spectrum of disciplines – dressage, eventing and showjumping – to secure several qualifications.

Any top-10 placing in a national final is then accorded points, which are totalled for the year and calculated as a percentage against the number of club members, a process which eventually determined Mid-Somerset as victors.

The trophy was presented last Friday at Saddler's Hall in London by Martin Clunes, president of the British Horse Society. Eight club members travelled to London for the ceremony. Mid-Somerset Riding Club is now in its 44th year.
