Mendip Ladies’ Hockey Club’s 1st XI twice came from behind to earn a draw in their final pre-season friendly.
A neatly-worked penalty corner gave Winscombe a great start but the hosts equalised midway through the first half when Sarah Hall capitalised on a loose pass and forged forward before firing home at the far post.
Mendip created several further chances as the half wore on, with Charlotte Lucas looking particularly dangerous in her new attacking midfield role, but it was Winscombe who regained the lead with an exceptional strike from the top of the D after a quick break.
Mendip draw level again after the break, though, when an excellent run from defender Sammy Chivers set up player of the match Melissa Forster, who showed great composure to draw the keeper before crossing for Charlene Vranch to slot home.
Mendip – who host Swanage & Wareham in their opening West Club Women’s League match on Saturday (1.30pm) – came close to securing victory late on but the in-form Winscombe keeper saved Cherilyn Carey’s penalty stroke.
