A tribute gig is being held to remember two young Somerton friends a year after a tragic car accident claimed both their lives.

Dan Gardner and Dan Matts, both of Somerton, were only 19 when they died in a car crash near Langport last September.

Now their friends have organised a free remembrance gig at their favourite local pub, the Globe in Somerton.

It will be staged on Sunday to celebrate what would have been Dan Matts’ 21st birthday.

Band The Floor Below, made up of drummer David Withers, 20, vocalist Alice Jardine, 18, bassist Nathan Sambell, 20, guitarist and backing vocalist Adam Leitch, 19, have organised and will headline the event.

Mr Withers said: “There are many reasons for doing this gig, however the main focus is to help keep the memory of the two Dans alive. They were such amazing people to know and they would have gone on to do incredible things, especially for their friends whom they never let down when they were needed.

“They would always do absolutely everything they could to make those around them feel happy when they were sad, reassured when they were uncertain and important when they felt low.”

Mr Withers said support for the event showed just how missed the two Dans were, a year after their deaths.

He hoped the gig could become an annual tribute to them.

He added: “They are greatly missed not just by us but by friends and family.”

The gig will be held in the marquee of the pub and will feature a variety of performers including acoustic musicians and stand-up comedians. The event will raise money for Dan Matts’ family’s charity of choice, Yeovil Heartbeat, with people attending asked to make voluntary donations.
