Dozens of firefighters have been tackling a huge blaze that destroyed a family pub in Yeovil this morning.

At least 16 fire engines were sent to the Bell Inn, part of the Hungry Horse chain, in Preston Road after flames broke out and tore through the premises at 4.20am today. It took four hours to extinguish.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service received numerous calls from the public as the blaze, which could be seen for miles around, took hold.

Crews from Yeovil, Martock, Somerton, Sherborne, Chard, Castle Cary, and Ilminster, as well as an aerial ladder platform and incident support unit from Taunton, a command unit and supporting pump from Street, the water carrier from Bridgwater, and the welfare unit from Burnham on Sea, were dispatched to the scene as the seriousness of the fire became clear.

Flames ripped through the ground and first floors and broke through the roof at the rear of the pub.

Firefighters wearing breathing sets entered the property because it was not known whether anyone was inside at the time.

All persons were later accounted for safe and well.

The blaze was extinguished using six main jets, two aerial ladder platforms, and one hose reel jet, backed by hydrants and the water carrier.

An investigation into the cause has been launched.
