Residents head for the polls
LOCALS are taking to the polls today to vote for their new town councillor.
A builder and a teacher are going head-to-head in the polls for the current vacancy on Langport Town Council.
Voters will have to chose between Garry Edmunds, of The Avenue, Huish Episcopi, and Stephen Jenkinson, of Newtown, Huish Episcopi.
Mr Edmunds has run local building company G S Edmunds Ltd for 25 years.
He said: "I am not driven by political opinions but I do care what happens in Langport and to the people living here. I feel that I can bring a down-to-earth, realistic and common sense approach."
Mr Jenkinson is a former governor of Huish Episcopi Primary School and currently teaches at Strode College in Street.
He also headed the Newtown Says No campaign against plans for 36 homes off of Newtown Road.
He hopes to address issues such as transport, housing, education, health care, jobs, and the environment.
He said: "It is important to try to seek small-scale, realistic solutions to local challenges whenever possible.
"I am standing as an independent candidate with enthusiasm, integrity, a good sense of humour and a realistic view of the world."
Polling takes place at the Ridgway Hall from 7am until 10pm.
