The southbound carriageway of the motorway was closed between junction 25 at Taunton and junction 26 at Wellington for more than six hours while police dealt with the aftermath of the incident.

Sergeant Jim Whatley said: “This is a serious incident in which a young man has tragically lost his life.

“I am particularly keen to speak to anyone who was using the motorway network at this time who may have witnessed this collision.”

Diversions through Taunton via the A38 were in operation throughout the closure and the motorway reopened shortly before 1pm.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, or who has any information, should call police on 101.

“A tragedy of course, but how could police spend six hours with the motorway closed?

There were no road repairs required and police supposedly now have laser and GPS aided equipment to speedily map out the scene, so what did they do for the remaining five hours?

In Germany, traffic would be moving on the Autobahn within the hour. I shudder to think what the cost to the nation is of having the regions only motorway closed for so long.”
