They donned dry suits and used two boats to rescue the man.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "A more substantial road closure has again been put in place for this road as people had been continuing to drive through road closure signs that were already in place."

On Sunday afternoon, This is Somerset published a spectacular video of the flooding on the A361 between Burrowbridge and East Lyng.

A torrent of water swept over the road after surging down the side of a nearby hill.

Stunned motorists stopped and watched the road become completely submerged by the flood rapids.

Fences and farmyard gates were almost entirely engulfed by the torrent of flood water, which flowed across the road and into a field opposite.
