A man being sought by police on suspicion of murder after a woman’s body was found in Wiltshire was arrested on Exmoor yesterday morning.

Detectives in Wiltshire had appealed for help to find Richard Newton, who they wanted to speak to in connection with the discovery of the woman’s body at a house in the Bowerhill area of Melksham on Sunday morning.

On Sunday night, they said the 51-year-old’s VW Polo had been found unattended at Brendon Common on Exmoor, and yesterday morning, police said a man had been arrested at Dulverton, eight miles away, in west Somerset. He was last night in custody in Taunton.

Detectives in Wiltshire said a post-mortem examination was due to take place late yesterday to establish a cause of death and formal identification of her would ‘follow in due course’.
