MP is given petition over dog attacks
A YEOVIL woman whose pet dog was mauled to death in her back garden has handed a petition to Yeovil MP David Laws.
Jane Holmes, 50, of Southway Crescent, wants the current legislation on dog attacks on humans to be extended to dog attacks on other animals.
She organised a petition calling for the change in the law after her four-year-old Pomeranian, Max, was attacked and killed by another dog.
Mrs Holmes wants dog owners to be made more responsible for their pets and her petition, which calls for owners of dogs that attack or kill other animals to be prosecuted, attracted more than 1,000 signatures.

She said: "I hope the Government extends the law so animals can be protected. The police should have more power when something happens to a pet – or any kind of animal.
"People should have more control over their pets, especially if they are out in public. Someone has to stand up for these animals."
Mrs Holmes, who also wants all dogs to be micro-chipped and kept on a lead in public places, presented her petition to Mr Laws who has written to the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs on her behalf.
Mrs Holmes added: "I'm going to see what happens and if nothing happens I will have to look into what I can do further, because I won't let this rest. We must be a nation of animal lovers."
The attack on Mrs Holmes' dog happened weeks before a seven-year-old German shepherd cross belonging to Carol Cursons, 65, was attacked by two Staffordshire bull terrier-type dogs on St Michael's Road, Yeovil, in July.
