Wells MP Tessa Munt has been cleared of allegations of electoral fraud.

Suggestions she broke the rules over the number of people registered to vote at her Sedgemoor home had been made in the Mail on Sunday.

Sedgemoor District Council refused to make any comment on specific cases but, following an investigation, a spokesman said: "If there are any incidences of suspected electoral fraud, these would be passed over to the police under the Representation of the People's Act for criminal investigation.

"Sedgemoor District Council does not currently have any cases that fall into this category."

The council also confirmed there are no criminal cases for over-claiming council tax discount under investigation or pending.

A spokesman for Ms Munt said she was pleased there were no criminal actions being pursued.

The spokesman said: "Tessa maintained from the moment the allegations were first made regarding council tax benefit that she had not broken the law.

"Tessa said before the election that she had not claimed council tax benefit and she confirmed today that her promise was the truth; she has not claimed council tax benefit.

"However, in common with many other constituents, Tessa is entitled to single person discount because she is the only person living at her home. A spokesperson from Tessa's office confirmed the police had been asked by Sedgemoor to investigate in April and May this year and they had confirmed there was no case to answer."

The spokesman added: "The Sedgemoor statement is the clearest indication to date that Ms Munt, like all other persons investigated as part of the regular exercise, has no case to answer."

Four people had been registered to vote at her Mark home during the period she claimed the discount, which is believed to have sparked the investigation.

Sedgemoor has also revealed its investigation into all the district's disputed council tax discounts was over but again refused to comment on individual cases.

The MP's spokesman said: "Ms Munt is still awaiting official confirmation from Sedgemoor District Council and will be able to make further comment when this occurs."

The investigation involved the council looking at confidential personal information held within its separate IT systems – including checking the electoral roll against the council tax records.

Officials said that the exercise across the district showed 749 irregularities among Sedgemoor council tax payers.

Dave Churchill, Sedgemoor's revenues service manager, said "The single person discount is 25 per cent of the council tax charge due and represents a large amount of money each year. To protect the public purse and ensure discounts are only given to those entitled, this discount is reviewed regularly. Where incorrect or fraudulent claims are made the council will seek to recover the amounts due and will take the appropriate civil or criminal action on each case to achieve this. Currently, we have no criminal actions on-going or pending in regard to single person discount."
