MP under fire over child care criticisms
SOMERTON and Frome MP David Heath has been slammed by councillors for criticising childcare in Somerset.
The criticism came after Mr Heath voiced his concerns in the House of Commons over a recent damning Ofsted inspection into care of vulnerable children in the county.
In August ,the watchdog found the Somerset County Council's care to be "inadequate" for a second year.
Mr Heath criticised the council's leadership.
He told the House: "May we have a debate on how child protection services in Somerset, which were adjudged to be outstanding just five years ago, were last year judged to be inadequate, with Ofsted saying this year that there has been no improvement?
"Does it not show an astonishing failure of political leadership and management that Somerset County Council, which does not face overwhelming demands on its social services, is now considered to be among the 17 worst local authorities at protecting our children?"
But John Osman, county council leader, said: "I find it totally staggering that an MP who voted for cuts of over £100 million funding to key services in the county can stand in the House of Commons and play petty politics with a very important issue regarding child care."
