Taunton’s Lucy Shuker experienced the highs and lows of Paralympic wheelchair tennis at Eton Manor as she crashed out of the singles before progressing in the doubles competition.

Shuker saw her singles campaign come to an abrupt end as she slipped to a 6-4, 6-2 defeat against Holland’s Jiske Griffioen.

But she then teamed up with fellow Brit Jordanne Whiley to reach the doubles semi-final with a 6-3, 6-3 win against German duo Sabine Ellerbrock and Katarina Kruger.

Shuker said: “It didn’t feel like I played my best tennis but Jiske is a great player.

“There are still medals to be won in the doubles though and I’m looking forward to playing more matches.

“It’s an amazing venue at Eton Manor and I’m enjoying every match I play here.”

Helena Lucas extended her lead at the top of 2.4mR standings as she edged closer to Great Britain’s first ever Paralympic sailing medal.

The 37-year-old secured two bullets – sailing terminology for victory – on Monday and picked up a win and a fourth place yesterday.

Lucas, the only woman in the fleet, has an 11-point cushion over second-placed German Heiko Kroger.

“It was a really long day,” she said. “We must have been on the water for about six hours with really shifty conditions.

“Whatever it brings [today] I’m looking forward to it and if I can have another good day on the water it would be fantastic. I’m really enjoying the regatta, it has been one hell of an experience and I’m really enjoying it.”
