Secret World wildlife rescue centre in Somerset is appealing for help to find loving homes for a booming population of pet rabbits, after stepping in to avert a crisis at a rabbit rescue centre in Gloucestershire.

Carrot Top Rabbit Rescue called for help after it took in 16 rabbits that had been crammed into two hutches.

Some were pregnant and have now given birth, and Carrot Top’s owner is ill and in hospital.

Secret World founder Pauline Kidner said: "All the rabbits will be vaccinated and neutered before going to homes."

Secret World is also looking after eight ferrets dumped in a hedge near Shapwick for which no other suitable temporary home could be found, and is feeding 100 hedgehogs which were not heavy enough to hibernate.

The sanctuary hopes the public will donate tinned cat food, cat biscuits and shredded paper to help the hedgehogs. To help, ring 01278 783250 or visit www.secretworld.org .
