Wells Journal

It is the nation's favourite takeaway – and to mark National Chip Week from February 20-26 we want to know where the best chip in mid-Somerset can be found.

The Wells Journal wants its readers to nominate their favourite chip provider.

It could be fish and chip shop, takeaway, restaurant, pub or burger van.

The Wells winner will take part in a fry-off with the best chips in Shepton Mallet, Glastonbury and Street and the Cheddar Valley areas.

Last year the four finalists were Steve's Fish and Chips in Shepton Mallet, R&T's in Street, the Pound Inn at Coxley and Tuckers in Cheddar Gorge.

The finalists were selected by our readers in the biggest reader generated poll we have ever run – hundreds of readers got passionate about their favourites.

The winner could be a traditional chunky chippy chip, a French fry, gourmet wedge or superb scallop.

Chips might have a reputation for unhealthy eating, but a portion of takeaway fish and chips contains just 60 per cent of the calories found in sweet-and-sour chicken, egg-fried rice and a portion of vegetable spring rolls.

Chicken tikka masala, pilau rice and a plain naan has 17 per cent more fat than a portion of fish and chips. Fish suppers remain the nation's favourite, outselling Indian food at a rate of 2 to 1.

We would also like to know what is mid-Somerset's favourite accompaniment – do you like your chips with fish, are you a battered sausage fan, is the steak and kidney pie the dinner of champions, will you happily devour chicken and is the cheese and onion pasty still the only thing for vegetarians – or are you happy with just salt, vinegar, gravy, ketchup, curry sauce, mayo or all of the above?

You can write with your nomination to Chips With Everything, Wells Journal, Southover, Wells BA5 1UH, email wells@midsom news.co.uk, or visit our Facebook page and make your nominations there.

Nominations need to be in by Thursday, February 16.

This test is going to be completely unscientific and carried out by entirely impartial judges.
