The new system involves self-service kiosks and the hope is it will reduce queues at peak times.

Councillor David Hall, who is responsible for libraries, said staff will be on hand to help people to get to grips with new technology.

Mr Hall said: "Staff will be on hand to help people get to grips with the new technology.

"We've already successfully introduced self-service in Taunton, Burnham-on-Sea, Bridgwater and Wells libraries and I'm sure it will prove just as successful in Frome."

Pat Box, who is a home library service volunteer with the Women's Royal Volunteer Service for nearly 20 years has been given the honour of cutting the ribbon for the official re-opening.

Mrs Box has made thousands of visits to housebound people who otherwise would not have had access to a library service.

Following the reopening there will be a range of activities to welcome the community back to the library. Singer Joe Krige will start proceedings by performing a selection of classic poetry set to music.

Refreshments will be served from 9.30am until noon and there will be opportunities to chat with library staff about specialist services such as E and E-audio books, the Somerset Enquiry Centre and the Home Library Service.

Groups that use the library on a regular basis will also be on hand to discuss what they have to offer.

Somerset and Dorset Family History Society, Frome Community Education, Mendip Community Credit Union and the Feel Better With a Book Group will all be in attendance and there will be a presentation from 10.15am on E and E-audio books.
