"Hear ye, hear ye! This town ain't big enough for the both of us!"

This is the cry from Wells town crier Len Sweales after discovering that he has an online impersonator.

A familiar figure around England's smallest city Len dresses in his traditional green garb reading proclamations and putting on a show for tourists and fulfilling official duties.

Len takes his duties seriously and is a proud ambassador for Wells.

He has therefore been upset to hear that an anonymous person on Twitter has been using a picture of him on their profile and making their feeling about Wells known.

Going by the name Grumpy of Wells, he or she frequently complains about the number of tourists who come to the city and the traffic wardens, as well as using much stronger language than Len would ever put in print.

Len said: "I've been cloned. The first I heard of it was someone saying to me that they follow me on twitter. I didn't know what they were talking about.

"It turns out they've been saying tourists aren't welcome in Wells. I don't want people to associate that with me. But the thing is it's not even an assumption. People see my picture and think I'm writing it."

Len has been in touch with Twitter but they say they can not do anything about it until Len can prove that he is really who he says he is. Despite the red tape he intends to make an official complaint.

Len said: "It doesn't really bother me what people say but just don't say it's me.

"I'm an ambassador for Wells and this is damaging for the image of Wells."

Len does not use any social media as computers aren't really his thing.

"I'm not very good with computers. My daughter put me on Facebook and I can't work that out."

So if you tweet beware that although he uses our town crier's image Grumpy of Wells is not who he appears.

Should Len ever decide to take to the Twitterverse he knows what pseudonym he would choose.

He said: "When I found out what they were called I said if I was twittering I'd be Fat Man in Green!"
