Leisure park unveils £3m pool complex
A MULTI-MILLION pound vision to redevelop Brean Leisure Park's outdoor swimming pool complex into an all-weather attraction including an ice rink have been unveiled.
Owner Richard House hopes to spend £3 million revamping the 1970s site by installing a roof to cover a 25m pool, creating an ice rink for up to 60 skaters at a time, refurbishing flumes and adding a lazy river.
He is hoping to buy a 210ft by 180ft used prefabricated building from Bristol and ship it down, and a cafe and gym are also in the pipeline.
Mr House hopes to submit a planning application to Sedgemoor District Council in August, with work starting in September and taking up to three years.
He will keep parts of the site, which includes indoor and outdoor pools, four flumes, and a children's pool and slide, open while work takes place.
Mr House said: I am a gambler, I'm feeling confident about this project. If we can pull it off it will be a really interesting, modern attraction.
"There will be a proper swimming pool to be proud of and fun parts for the children. The younger ones don't want to swim – they want to step on certain places and be squirted with water."
The ice rink will be the last part of the project and Mr House is trialling a temporary rink in August to see how popular it is.
He hopes to use modern technology to convert the heat loss from the rink to warm the pool water.
Mr House said: "We hope to be more energy efficient and want the heat lost from the rink to heat the pool.
"It's also possible in the future to use the energy lost from our fridges to power other things."
Presently, the pool complex employs three full- and 14 part-time staff, but it is hoped when the new complex is fully operational this will double and cater for up to 500 visitors per session.
Mr House said: "Tourism in the county is big business and naturally an expansion will not only provide more facilities but more jobs.
"We are happy for people to join our 200-strong workforce."
