Welton Rovers manager Mark Leaney admits the fixture list has been kind in allowing him time to build his squad.

Leaney took over at Welton four weeks ago but since then they have only played two league games, with an FA Vase tie to come this weekend.

"It's been very useful to have some time without a game – it's given us time to build the squad and get the training in and the fitness levels up," said Leaney.

"All the players I've signed are people I knew already.

"The atmosphere is brilliant – they know it's going to take time, but they've all mucked in really well.

"The people at Welton have been really friendly and accommodating, and they recognise that they've got to be patient."

Leaney has been busy attracting players to the club, with Mike Charlton and Andy Sparks arriving from Wells, Andy Forward from Bridgwater and goalkeeper Courtney Redwood from Paulton.

Nathan Loader, Ryan Trowbridge and Matt Parsons have joined from Frome, while Jake Antell joins from Radstock Town and Craig Rimmer from Wellington.

Mark Rowlands has also re-signed for Welton, although he will not be available until the end of September.

"A lot of them haven't played many games so we need to focus on us and getting our team patterns going," said Leaney.

"We didn't just sign players for the sake of signing them – we knew which areas we needed to cover.

"We still need a left-sided player and possibly another forward.

"I've got a system in my head that I'd like to play and we need to see if the team can develop into that.

"We need to get some games under our belts."

Welton host Wessex League outfit Verwood Town in the FA Vase on Saturday (3pm).
