Frome Netball Club's first team, the Stars, started their Winter League campaign with a 36-30 victory over Wessex Sabres in Devizes.

The visitors got off to a great start, intercepting several Sabres centre passes to allow Sammie and Monica to score a string of goals without reply.

Wessex began to pick up their game and moved 10-9 ahead by the end of the quarter but Frome bounced back as good centre-court play from Sophie and Jo, combined with the defensive skills of Nikki and Shirelle, helped Stars bring the scores level at 18-18.

While Sabres again made changes to their line-up, the visitors stuck with the same players. Good defending by the hosts restricted Frome's opportunities and they trailed 25-23 going into the final quarter.

The Stars got the ball forward to their shooters well and they put their chances away in a dominant display which saw them win 13-5 over the last 15 minutes.

Jo Knight and Sophie Cox picked up the player of the match awards.

Meanwhile, Frome Hearts beat Newbarn 35-24 in Division 4 of the Somerset League.

Frome were ahead for some of the opening quarter but trailed 9-6 at the end of it, before fighting back in fine style as good defensive work from Nicky restricted Newbarn to two goals.

Katherine and Laura passed the ball accurately, while Jenny and Meg found shooters Hannah and Laura to put Frome into a 15-11 lead.

An injury to a Newbarn player meant they had to continue with six and Hearts took full advantage by adding to their lead.
