Landmarks open doors to visitors
THREE historical Sedgemoor landmarks feature as part of English Heritage's Heritage Open Days 2010.
The free days, which run from September 9 to 12, aim to showcase the country's finest, historical architecture and culture not usually open or otherwise charging to enter.
Sedgemoor has three such icons – Sedgemoor Magistrates' Court, Northgate, Bridgwater, as well as Westonzoyland Pumping Station and Coleridge Cottage at Nether Stowey. Pre-booking is not needed.
Organised by volunteers – the event is England's biggest and most popular voluntary cultural event.
Sedgemoor Magistrates' Court, Northgate, Open Day on Saturday, September 11, from 10am to 2pm. A tour of the court including the cells and prisoner transport vehicle, mock trials and sentencings, and visit displays by other agencies involved in the judicial system.
It is organised by HMCS Sedgemoor Branch.
Westonzoyland Pumping Station Museum. Hoopers Lane, Westonzoyland, Open Day on Sunday, September 12, from noon to 5pm.
The museum has the first steam powered pumping station on the Somerset levels.
A grade two-listed building built c.1830, it had the largest collection of working steam engines and pumps in South England.
There will be a children's quiz and snack bar, shop and picnic area available.
Coleridge Cottage, Lime Street, Nether Stowey, Open Day on Saturday, September 11, from 2pm to 5pm.
Discover Samuel Taylor Coleridge's former home of three years from 1797, where he wrote The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Frost at Midnight and Kubla Khan.
