Her appointment follows four decades of support for the charity, starting in the 1970s when she had been centre organiser of the Nether Stowey Red Cross.

In the 1980s, Lady Gass was district coordinator of West Somerset Red Cross and, since then, she has served as vice president and deputy president during the 1990s and early 2000s.

More recently Lady Gass was involved in the Somerset Red Cross centenary celebrations in 2010, and every year she opens her gardens at Storgursey during Red Cross Week to raise thousands of pounds for the charity's work helping people in crisis.

Lady Gass said: “I was delighted to receive my certificate and badge confirming me as a new patron for Somerset and am looking forward to continuing my fundraising work for the British Red Cross in Somerset."

Operations director Sarah Gibson said: “We are delighted to welcome Lady Gass as our new patron.

"The role of Red Cross Patron is a very important one, acting as a local ambassador for the charity and helping us to raise funds to promote our vision and mission locally.”
