Lacklustre Midsomer Norton well beaten on first North Bristol trip since 1994
MATCH REPORT: North Bristol RFC 1st XV 34 Midsomer Norton RFC 1st XV 10
Midsomer Norton Rugby Club's 1st XV were well below-par on their first visit to North Bristol since 1994 as they slumped to a heavy defeat.
The visitors started brightly, with centres Jack Rowles and Alex Mitchard slicing through the Bristol defence at will, and it was from one such run that the latter scored the opening try after six minutes.
This proved to be one of Norton’s few bright moments, though, as Bristol hit back almost immediately to draw level before going on to dominate for long spells.
Every time Norton threatened to get back into the game, basic errors or poor decision-making enabled Bristol to relieve the pressure.
The hosts added a penalty and a further try when Norton failed to collect a box kick to take a deserved 15-5 lead into the break.
The second half didn’t see any real improvement in the Norton performance, allowing the hosts to comfortably ease to a convincing bonus-point win.
Norton did manage a final rally, which gave some indication of their abilities, when a storming catch and drive from their own half saw David Sawkins go over for an excellent try.
But it was little consolation for a lacklustre performance and Norton will need to regroup on Saturday when they host Bristol Harlequins at Norton Down (3pm).
